DR Congo Defeats Nigeria, 4-3 in Penalties
Super Eagles of Nigeria’s quest to be at the 2026 World Cup ended after DR. Congo defeated them 4-3 on penalties after full time had ended 1-1, With this, DR Congo has picked Africa’s sole ticket for the intercontinental play-offs billed for March next year.

In a tight and dramatic playoff match at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay El Hassan in Rabat, Nigeria's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended on Sunday night as the Super Eagles lost 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo.
After a long game marked by unused opportunities, tough defense, and intense emotion, Nigeria was crushed as the Leopards maintained their composure in the shootout to progress. The match ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.
In the third minute, Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria the ideal start by scoring from the edge of the box after goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau was wrong-footed by a deflection.
After a deft pass from Cedric Bakambu, Meschack Elia of DR Congo equalized in the 32nd minute.
