Keeping Nigeria Safe – Why Security is Everyone’s Job

Nigeria has been facing rising security challenges lately. From attacks on schools and worship centres to kidnappings in communities, it’s clear that safety cannot be taken for granted. While the government is taking steps to respond, citizens also play a huge role in keeping our country safe. What the Government is Doing The government has declared a nationwide security emergency. More police officers are being recruited, forest guards are being deployed, and states that set up local security teams are getting support. Intelligence operations are being strengthened, highways are being repaired, and Joint Task Forces have been set up in the most affected areas. The Senate has also taken strong measures. Kidnapping is now officially classified as terrorism, carrying a mandatory death penalty, while security agencies are instructed to intensify joint operations and collaborate across state lines. These steps send a clear message: crimes that threaten citizens will not be tolerated. But laws and orders are only part of the solution. Security starts with everyone being aware, alert, and proactive. No Pardon, No Amnesty Amnesty programs for bandits have sparked debate, but they are not the solution. Forgiving armed criminals or giving them weapons to reintegrate into society sends the wrong message and risks more violence, not less. In my view, bandits who commit violent crimes should not receive pardons or amnesty. True security comes from holding offenders accountable, ensuring justice for victims, and using structured rehabilitation programs only for those who genuinely reform under strict supervision. Peace cannot be achieved by ignoring responsibility or offering shortcuts. How Citizens Can Help Security isn’t just the government’s responsibility. Citizens have a role to play too: • Stay alert and report suspicious activities. • Support local community safety initiatives. • Encourage accountability and proper justice for offenders. Even small actions like keeping an eye on your neighbourhood or sharing information about potential threats can make a big difference. Awareness and participation are key. Why It Matters Protecting Nigeria is a shared responsibility. While government action is important, citizens are the frontline of safety. By staying informed, involved, and proactive, we can help reduce crime and make our towns, schools, and communities safer. The goal is clear: collective effort, vigilance, and accountability, without giving pardons or amnesty, is essential to keep our nation safe.
