Peller’s Rise, Controversies, and the Question of Accountability

Habeeb Hamzat, better known as Peller, is one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising TikTok stars. But his ascent has been anything but smooth. From bold content to public clashes with religious leaders, Peller’s journey raises a larger question: to what extent do we “make” these internet personalities—and how much responsibility do they carry?

Peller’s Rise, Controversies, and the Question of Accountability
WHO IS PELLER? Peller burst onto the scene through comedy skits and live content. Over time, he’s grown a significant following, fueled by his unapologetic personality, humor, and willingness to wade into sensitive topics. But as his influence grows, so does the scrutiny. CONTROVERSIES PILING UP 1. The “Tummy” Comment Incident One of Peller’s most recent viral moments occurred backstage at an Olamide concert. In a casual conversation, he asked a woman if she had been pregnant before, telling her her stomach “looked big.” The woman, visibly uncomfortable, simply walked away. Social media erupted: many called the comment “uncouth” and accused Peller of body-shaming. This incident hits at a delicate nerve. It wasn’t just rude — it was deeply personal, violating unspoken boundaries around a woman’s body. For public figures, such lapses carry amplified weight. 2. Clash with the Clergy Peller’s relationship with Christianity and public faith has been contentious. In one viral video, he joined gospel singer Ebuka Songs, speaking in tongues and making prophetic declarations. Some religious leaders, notably Pastor Kesiena Esiri of the Remnant Christian Network, did not take it lightly. The pastor accused Peller of mocking spiritual practices and called his content Satanic. Peller responded emotionally, holding a Bible and quoting John 7:24, arguing that people shouldn’t judge him based on appearances or misconceived judgments. He also threatened to sue Pastor Esiri, accusing him of using Peller’s name to solicit offerings from his congregation. 3. Allegations of Body-Shaming and Tribal Insults In a separate incident, a woman named Nkese accused Peller of insulting her during a job interview. She claimed he mocked her body and made derogatory remarks about her tribe. Peller defended himself: according to him, the comments were misinterpreted, and he said he was joking when he referenced needing someone educated for the role. WHY WE SHOULDN'T LAUGH IT OFF Peller’s antics are often dismissed as “just content,” but there's more at stake: ● Influence on Youth: With millions following him, his words don’t just entertain — they shape perceptions. When he mocks or questions personal boundaries, it normalizes that behavior for his audience. ● Power + Responsibility: Public figures don’t operate in a vacuum. Their privilege comes with influence. When they cross lines, it’s fair to ask: are they aware of the impact? ● Accountability Mechanisms: The digital world often lacks real consequences. There’s no HR, no moderator, no fine — but that doesn’t mean actions don’t matter. When public figures cause harm, the fallout is real — both socially and emotionally for those affected. Are We the Problem Too? One of the most uncomfortable but important angles is this: did we, as viewers, “make” Peller? We gave him a platform. We liked, shared, streamed. So while he’s responsible for what he says, we are also complicit in elevating his voice. When controversies arise, instead of merely canceling, maybe the conversation should include: How do we demand better? What kind of creators do we want to support? A Turning Point or Just Noise? Peller stands at a crossroads. He’s young, influential, and clearly aware of the backlash — yet he continues to push. There are opportunities for growth: ● He could use his platform to apologize and learn, showing that even influencers can evolve. ● He could engage in more thoughtful content, setting an example for how to be bold and respectful. ● Or he could dismiss the criticisms and double down, keeping the controversy machine running. Either way, his story is symptomatic of a larger moment in Nigerian digital culture — one where creators are powerful, audiences are growing, and the lines between entertainment, morality, and accountability are increasingly blurred.
