South Africa Set to Bid for 2036 or 2040 Olympic and Paralympic Games

South Africa is set to bid for the 2036 or 2040 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the government said on Thursday, 13 November 2025—the first for an African country if it gets the hosting rights. Already the country was the first on the continent to host the football World Cup in 2010 successfully. Minister in the presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said at a briefing that "South Africa initiates its intention to bid for the 2036 and 2040 Olympic Games." Ntshavheni said the government had entered into "continuous dialogue with the International Olympic Committee."
