VIP Protection vs. Community Safety

A new report by the European Union Agency for Asylum reveals that over 100,000 police
officers in Nigeria are assigned to VIPs, leaving ordinary citizens with limited protection.
Out of a total police force of 371,800, this has contributed to slow emergency
responses, corruption, and weak accountability.
Experts and policy advisers, including Hadiza Bala-Usman, have called for reforms to
allow private security firms to handle VIP protection, freeing the police to focus on
national security and community policing.
